              _{H U M A N .  well, mostly.  her proportions are a little strange, but she has feet, at least.  and hair!  she gives it an experimental tug, then frowns.  hair hurts.  still, she has brand new legs to stretch, and so she takes off into the trees – trees !  has she ever seen anything so tall?}

               _{she is not hiding — she isn’t afraid of anything!  she stays pressed flat to the rock because she is pretending to be a STARFISH.  surely no one will notice her clever disguise.}

                 _{she is floating aimlessly, arms outstretched as she lets the current carry her.  the ocean once lead her to sosuke; it will always take her to something WONDERFUL, she is sure of it, and now that her father’s well is open and the sea is full of long forgotten creatures, every new sight makes her giddy.  just wait until she tells sosuke what she’s seen today!}

            _{the little fish has followed her nose from the river to the bathhouse, chasing after the warm scent of the street stalls.  it is only after she has stuffed herself on all manner of noodles and broths and ham! ham! ham! that she learns a valuable lesson — most people ( the notable exclusion being lisa ) expect MONEY in return for their food. after a frightening dash away from a very angry cook, ponyo finds herself surrounded by an entirely different smell.}

                                      _{it smells — clean!}

            _{ponyo wanders toward the scent until she finds a wide, warm tub just waiting for her.  she wriggles her small body upward, then PLOPS down into the water below, swimming in happy little circles.}

                 _{the woman is RED, like ponyo !  and beautiful, like ponyo’s mother.  she has never used the little box of buttons, but she was told that it was for beautiful things, so she holds it up to her face – the way she has seen others do – and begins to press every button her little fingers can find !}
